IBM Domino: The report of my death was an exaggeration

”I can understand perfectly how the report of my illness got about, I have even heard on good authority that I was dead.“

Samuel Clemens, aka Mark Twain, 31 May 1897

IBM Notes and Domino are dead. Right. It was predicted, it’s happening, it will happen. It is inevitable. Well, no, it’s not. Naysayers and competitors have cleverly manipulated the perception of Notes and Domino, relegating the product to email and, to cite just one example, recasting its longevity and durability as “legacy”. Perception can only change reality to the extent we allow it to and at some point – this point - we need to clutter the chatter with actual facts.

Upwards of 50,000 organizations access Domino applications - 10 million of them. Will any technology today still be around in 20 years? People, if there is one, this is it.

Applications that were developed over a quarter of a century ago are still compatible with the latest versions of Domino. Are you looking to protect your development investment? This is it.

There are tens and tens of thousands of Notes/Domino developers the world over. Want to invest in a technology where you can get the support you need? This is it.

Domino is a robust Web application server that combines broad enterprise data connectivity, advanced services, and an open, standards-based development environment. Want to rapidly and securely bring a Responsive Web 2.0 experience to your users? This is it.

IBM continues to innovate in bringing the Domino experience to a context tapered to your needs. The company now offers to host Domino applications for a low, monthly fee per application over IBM Cloud. Want to avoid the cost and complexity of managing your own application infrastructure? This is it.

IBM Notes/Domino 9.0 product support has been extended through at least 2021 with extended support through at least 2024. There is no end of life planned for these products.

IBM and HCL Technologies have entered into a strategic partnership to drive future development of the Domino portfolio. Users from across the planet are contributing to this effort via the Domino 2025 Jam program with the intent to release Domino version 10 by the end of the year.

So yes, rest assured, the reports of death have been an exaggeration; a bright new dawn is ascending for IBM Notes/Domino.

You hear that Mr. Anderson? That is the sound of inevitability. It is the sound of your death. Goodbye, Mr. Anderson.
